Let me begin by saying: this isn’t high entertainment. See Inception if you want a brain twister or The A Team for some good action. Instead Piranha 3D sticks true to its classic roots of putting as much gore as possible on screen in 90 minutes.

The plot is purely there to provide an excuse, in this instance an earthquake opens up a two million year-old cavern of hungry, hungry piranha who proceed to take a bite out of the students enjoying their Spring Break on the lake. Throw in a porn movie shoot (seriously) and you get the general idea.

At times the excess is a bit much, limbs filling the screen or other male organs being chewed upon but it’s all in good fun. And that’s what this film is: a laugh! Anyone who expects even a modicum of intelligence will grumble and moan afterwards, but for those who enjoy a Channel 5 11pm horror flick, this is perfect entertainment.
