Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

The fact that I can begin this review without a rant about Michael Cera should give you an idea of how much I enjoyed this film, more so than I had expected. This isn’t a film that will do well, most people will let it pass by and ultimately catch it on TV which is a shame as there is so much originality here it’s filled to bursting.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World tells the tale of, take a guess, Scott Pilgrim and his tragic love life. Michael Cera once again settles into the only acting style he can conjure, that awkward dork-like appearance that makes you want to smash his… I digress. It quickly becomes apparent that his latest crush, Ramona Flowers, comes with quite a lot of baggage. Queue several fights as Cera has to defeat each of her evil ex’s.

The fights are a delight to watch as they’re each so unique in their own rights. From sword-fights to rock-offs, acoustic dragons and vegan telekinesis, each has it’s own style. They’re never too short or too long and really help propel the film forwards towards its admittedly expected ending. And yet between these bouts of action you’re never left waiting for the next as the day to interactions are so well shot and patched together it feels like you’re flying between them.

Pilgrim won’t appeal to most, not even geeks will fully appreciate the humour, but it’s worth seeing purely to chance it. The visual effects, the sharp dialogue and corny humour make it one of my favourites of 2010.

My rating: 9/10
