The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice feels like the twentieth film to feature Nicolas Cage this year, yet it’s only the second. And maybe that perfectly sums up this film; you’ve seen it all before. Featuring a plot that is merely an excuse for wizards (sorry, sorcerers) to do battle, this film brings nothing new to the table itself. There are good bits within, as well as other acts that make you question the directors sanity, but the overall result is a muddle of confusion.

Jay Baruchel stars as the titular Apprentice, and also claims the accolade of having the only voice more grating than Michael Cera. He’s your typical dork, desperately trying to get the girl while finding out he has a destiny 1,500 years in the making. As I said, nothing new.

Pretty soon he’s battling enemies while under the guidance of Cage, and the fights themselves are often impressive with some of the best CGI I’ve seen in a kids fantasy film. It puts The Last Airbender to shame and the director can at least hold your attention. However, outside of these short bursts the film dissolves into a sopped mess with one scene feeling more like a 1930′s Disney sketch.

I’m not going to give away the ending, but needless to say it’s exactly what you expect. Overall this film is good for families, but anyone looking for something enjoyable who isn’t in single digits will be disappointed.

My rating: 5/10
