The Social Network

It’s no secret of my animosity towards Facebook. Unfortunately, it seems to be an unstoppable force so perhaps it was only inevitable that it’s rise, and that of its creator, would become the stuff of Hollywood sooner rather than later. Perhaps it’s the most surprising property of this film then that I enjoyed it immensely, despite my prior misgivings.

The Social Network tells the tale of Mark Zuckerberg (portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg) as he created Thefacebook while attending Harvard and the subsequent lawsuits that followed.

The script and overall performances are outstanding. This film really does have one of the best scripts going this year and it’s a credit to the cast how well they pull everything off. Unusually for Hollywood, the film as a whole does stay fairly true to real life, with the net result of most people now feeling sorry for Zuckerberg.

It’s amazing just how ruthless people can be over an idea, and is definitely a lesson anyone thinking of beginning a start-up should take on board. Friends can become enemies very quickly when you’re dealing with a multi-billion dollar company.

Overall The Social Network is one of the best dramas out this year and is definitely worth a watch. If Facebook lasts another five years there will undoubtedly be a sequel, but until then this shows how the team got to where they are today.

My rating: 8/10
