Mountain Links

If all goes well, this will publish while I’m at the summit of Snowdon, 1085 m above seal level. It’s a cop-out, but who am I to deprive you of some links on this fine day (it’s probably not going to be a fine day looking at Dark Sky). Stay tuned for a mega blast of URIs.

Caveat emptor, I have yet to read a lot of these (which is one of the reasons Instapaper is the greatest thing ever).

Technical Debt – Debt is bad, that’s a given. This is a nice summary of where it arises and how to fix it.

Server-Sent Events in Go – A nice demonstration of SSE for when you don’t need the full duplex route of websockets. And it’s nice to see a little go app handle 4K simultaneous sessions using <20 MB. Learn about the development tricks of Star Wars: Republic Commando in this candid video – This one’s pretty cool. One of the lead devs from one of the best games on Xbox plays through ten years on and narrates the reasons and decisions behind very aspects. Long but worth it.

How To Deploy a Basic PHP Application using Ansible on Ubuntu 14.04 – Who wouldathunk it, another good guide from DO. We’ve been playing with Ansible a lot lately at 383 and this was a good springboard for learning of the various modules and tricks.

Facebook Visual Identity – It’s always good to see how the “finished version” of many products came to be, even more so when they have a billion users.

How To Send a Hidden Version of Your Email That Only Apple Watch Will See – I’m pretty sure all the email marketers will be on this before you can click unsub, but a good catch by Litmus on text/apple-watch.

Death is not the end – Some food for thought. I like op eds that are starting to see how games can be more than just a timesink.

Daredevil’s Powers Are More Realistic Than You Think – And more non-geek-but-geeky articles. The reimagined Daredevil was amazing, so if you haven’t seen it already watch it first.

MicroservicePremium – Martin Fowler (of pretty much everything fame) has some words of wisdom and when and when not to break a system into microservices.

Redesigning Overcast’s Apple Watch app – Marco continues to be one the best designers and developers out there and his reasoned response to actually using an Apple Watch is worth reading.

Lily – Now this is sweet. A drone that follows you. Get one for a car and it’ll be like GTA!

Deku: How we built our functional alternative to React – I love seeing NIH. Forget reasons why or why not, seeing how others approach a solution, what they leave in, what they add, is always worthwhile. Deku to me is worth it just to not have to use Fibers to render to string.

Revisiting the Priority+ Pattern – The hamburger is dead. Use this pattern instead. Agree or not, it’s good to see a bit more experimentation in UIs than just shoving stuff in a drawer to forget about it.

Stupid certificate tricks – Definitely not recommended at home (as in, it will weaken any semblance of security), but there’s some fun maths tricks in this. Always good for a laugh.
