It seems I've been to the cinema more times in the past 3 months than the 3 years before. With a combination of cheap student tickets and special offers, it's often cheaper than a pint of lager which definitely helps. There are a few more films I'm planning to see before returning to Uni, but I've seen the vast majority of the films out today already.
Wall·e
I don't know what the marketing departments were thinking, but this just isn't a kids film. The lack of actual talk and storyline a child can understand means there's very little here to interest youngsters. However, from an adults point of view there's a lot more to see. Overall I think this film is more about the character design and animation than any real story or motive. Rating: 82%
Kung Fu Panda
This is classic Jack Black, only now in animated form. A good flick for those looking for something to keep kids happy, but nothing really new. The story wasn't overly bad, but there just doesn't seem to be anything fresh for viewers to enjoy. Rating: 68%
The X-Files: I Want To Believe
I used to love the original X-Files on TV and while the first movie wasn't that great it at least went further than most of the episodes. The new film however just feels like a regular, early season episode. Honestly, the plot feels more like a leftover two-hour special than anything new or creative. Rating: 57%
Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
A good story, lots of action but the camera work lets it down. Fast cuts and jerky pans make watching some of the more frantic scenes nauseating. And the ‘updated' cast just feel wrong somehow after the last two films. Basically, if you enjoyed the previous films, you'll likely get a kick out of this. But again, there's nothing genuinely inspiring or worth watching this for. Rating: 64%
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
I must admit, I really enjoyed the first Hellboy even if it was a bit unusual and down right rubbish in places. The new one features much better effects and fights, but also a worthy story. The ending is painfully obvious to those used to regular Hollywood clichés, but doesn't detract from the overall experience. Rating: 89%
Get Smart
Typical American humour, that's the only way to describe this film. The action is either cheesy slapstick or over-the-top CGI effects ridden. Having said that, this is still an enjoyable movie with some good performances. Rating: 72%
Babylon A.D.
This film really annoys because it was so close to being a really great hit. The beginning is actually OK, depicting a bleak war torn society with Vin Diesel making some kind of life amidst the ruins. Even the neon-light, Blade Runner-esque future New York is impressive. But the action is shot so badly and over so quickly that you'll be left wondering either what's going on or is it over already. And this isn't even touching on the plot which just falls to pieces in the last act and becomes laughable. So close, yet so far; my rating: 66%
Step Brothers
This is Will Ferrell at his best. The two lead actors portray their characters so well that no matter how crass or American the humour you just can't help but laugh. A cheesy ending but a good riot nonetheless. Rating: 73%
Rock N Rolla
The latest Guy Ritchie film is back to where it belongs, near Lock Stock quality even. The story lacks the multiple layers that made Lock Stock and Snatch so good, but the humour and acting is on fine form. Definitely worth watching if you've liked any of Ritchie's previous works. Rating: 91%
Bangkok Dangerous
I must admit I went to see this film on a complete whim after seeing Rock N Rolla (was a long night out) and actually ended up really enjoying it. This is what the Hitman film should have been like; no nonsense, no mercy violence but with a story that slowly wraps around. It doesn't have the emotional power of something like Man on Fire, nor the refined action of a Bond movie, but it does have a good mix of the two. Worth watching, but more so when it comes out on DVD. My rating: 86%
Aeon Flux
Not a new film by any means, but I picked this up from Zavvi for £2 after reading a post mentioning it on cracked.com (I believe). It's not a bad film, but the ending seems to be stretched a bit too far. I can't say much more without giving the plot away, but overall it's a nice film to watch. And for two quid it's a bargain. Rating: 72%
The Happening
Shyamalan has really lost his talent. I loved Signs, Sixth Sense was great, even Unbreakable was watchable. But his most recent films have been awful. The Village nearly sent me to sleep, Lady in the Water sounded so pathetic and The Happening, his latest ‘masterpiece', made me laugh in derision by the end. I don't want to say much more except, don't bother. Watch 28 Days Later or similar for an example of man meeting his end. Rating: 6%.
Prison Break Season 4
Ok, not a film I admit, but the latest season of Prison Break is shaping up to be quite good, against my expectations. After two actual prison breaks and a massive chase across most of America, I thought there was little else left for the show to cover, but they've pulled a very clever idea out of the hat and it seems like it might just turn into a good season.
Battlefield: Bad Company
I picked this game up at the recommendation of a friend and while it's being fun I've already grown tired of it. Yes, the maps are huge, but so were Far Crys, the only difference been in Far Cry you could make your way to an objective by multiple means, rather than the ‘one main path' option in Bad Company. The multiplayer, where the game really puts its efforts, also annoys me immensely. Firstly, there was one game type until only last week and the few maps, while large in scale, grow boring pretty quickly. A few bugs make an appearance to ruin the gameplay as well, missile guidance not showing until your 5 metres above the ground, enemies not dying from direct headshots or lagging around you, but by far the worst problem is the sheer number of Team Killers. I've seen round where the bottom half a team have more negative points than most matches put together. It's a joke and renders the unranked games unplayable. My rating: 72%
