In a future where a mutated virus strain means a mere touch can lead to instantaneous death, two children grapple with the dangers of friendship and play.

“What’s it like?”

“What?”

“I dunno. Being cold I suppose. All dead inside.”

“Don’t know. I don’t get cold. Not anymore. Just hungry.”

Lisa finished flipping down faces on her board.

“I’m cold all the time,” she said.

“I wish I could feel cold,” Jun said. “Do they have blue eyes?”

Lisa shook her head and Jun started flipping down the faces with blue eyes on his board. It was one of the few games they could play without touching. The thick gloves over Lisa’s hands meant she often accidentally knocked down surrounding cards, but it was worth it to see Jun.

“No you don’t silly,” she said. “Nobody wants to be cold.”

“I know but. I wish I could feel something cold, because then I’d know there’s something good left.”
