Convicted of murder and executed, Hell awaits. 10 years later the jury finds innocence in a retrial.

“I didn’t do it.”

“Lord knows you didn’t. I’ve seen every type of murderer enter my domain. I once had a man impaled after he cast his wife into a pit of vipers. Such a gentle man. It’s always the quiet ones. You have cruelty in your heart. You are not, what is the word, innocent.”

“I’ve done some bad things, but I didn’t touch that girl, I swear.”

“And yet your peers found you guilty and you were hung from the neck until dead. Such a classic punishment. Needles just don’t have the same effect.”

“I want to go home.”

“Consider this your new home.”

“I want to see her again.”

“I was hoping you’d say that. There is a precedent for this. It seems in recent centuries Blackstone’s ratio has shall we say, fallen out of favour. But I have use for men such as yourselves, men who have visited evil upon the world before the world had done with them.”

“That was war. I was a soldier. Orders.”

“Oh if I had a coin for every soul who had perished at the hands of men who were just following orders. Your mission is not yet done soldier. I will grant you your wish. You will return to the mortal realm.”

“Oh god, thank you!”

“Heresy notwithstanding, you shall return, but as an agent of my army. The demonic cannot ascend and possession has unfortunate side-effects, but you will be free to roam up there until I am done with you.”

“What do I have to do?”

“There are others who have escaped justice. The villainous to your virtue. You will send them to me in your place.”

“I have to kill.”

“Until I release your soul.”

“And if I don’t?”

“We would begin with fire. Once the flesh has been removed, I find the subject is much more receptive to their punishment.”

“I’ll do it.”
