You wake up in the hospital with a broken arm and leg and someone’s skin in your teeth. What happened?

The world came back into focus slowly. Only two times before in my life had I woken feeling like this. On my 18th birthday, when I consumed more booze than should have been humanly possible. And after finishing hell week when I joined the SEALs.

“You look like shit.”

I smiled. Of course. I tried to roll over, but came up short. My left arm was wrapped in plaster. My right was handcuffed to the rail of the gurney. Dan swam into view, holding out a cup which I greedily began to sip from.

“You need to explain this one.”

“What’s to tell?”

I leant back on the bed and let out a long breath. Two days. Two days in hell and all I had to show for it was a battered and broken body.

“They found you in the wreckage, next to his. You still had a chunk of his neck in your mouth.”

“Never gonna get rid of the taste of that.”

“How? How did you find him John? What possessed you to chase him?”

“I don’t need to explain my reasons. Least of all to you.”

“They were my friends too John. I lived on that base for a year before you got dropped into our squad. You think I didn’t want to kill him, after leaving Arlington?”

“It was personal.”

“It was personal for me too.”

“He killed Mary.”

Dan let go of the rail where his knuckles had gone white as he argued with me. I could see the shock pass over his face. The fight went out of him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” he finally asked.

“He did it to taunt me. He followed me from Bosnia to Benning. He toyed with me and when he took her…” The heart rate monitor beside my bed began to beep incessantly. “I finished him.”

“That you did,” Dan said. “That you did.”
